Minister Debunks Claims About Benefit Cuts for Millions of Families
The assertion that the government has cut benefits for nearly 1.4 million families is entirely false, emphasized Dr. Upali Pannewa, the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security, and Community Empowerment. He made this declaration during a special event at the Anuradhapura Buddhist University auditorium.
The minister noted that the Department of Samurdhi Development is currently implementing a national program titled “New Strength to Community Support,” aiming to assist low-income families across various districts, including Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, and Mullaitivu. This meeting was held to update Samurdhi officers on the initiative.
Further clarifying the situation, Dr. Pannewa pointed out that around 1,206,000 individuals are currently receiving the benefits. He described claims stating that over 1.4 million recipients have had their benefits halted as a 'misleading and absurd' assertion that lacks practical mathematical veracity.
In its first phase, benefits had previously been issued to 989,000 applicants. After a recent review, a list of 991,000 qualified recipients has been released, marking a slight increase of 2,000 in the number of beneficiaries. Additionally, there are approximately 740,000 applications pending review for this initial phase.
Currently, around 215,000 beneficiaries are registered under this phase, with evaluations scheduled to take place next year. The government has committed to ensuring that no benefits are interrupted for existing recipients until this review process is completed.
Dr. Pannewa further explained that data comparisons in the future will not result in the removal of beneficiaries. Instead, as more qualified individuals join, the number of recipients is expected to rise. He urged the public not to fall for such misleading information circulated by certain parties with ulterior motives.
