Intensifying Protests in India Amid Electoral Controversy

The political atmosphere in India has taken a heated turn with the involvement of the 'Cockroach People's Party' (CJP), a satirical youth political movement, amplifying the ongoing protests. Prior to the demonstrations, the Delhi Police implemented stringent measures to prevent disorder, leading to the arrest of CJP founder Abhijith Dipke shortly after he arrived in New Delhi via flight. Additionally, prominent YouTube activist Dhruv Rathi, known for his sharp critiques of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was taken into custody at his residence in Gurugram.

In response to the protests, central New Delhi has transformed into a heavily fortified zone, prohibiting any demonstrations and deploying more than 20,000 police personnel to maintain order. Authorities have also designated city sports complexes as temporary detention centers, while cutting off internet connections to curb mobilization efforts. Furthermore, the suspension of around 250 long-distance trains to Delhi, along with restrictions on the metro rail system, has prompted intervention from the Indian Supreme Court.

The opposition parties accuse the Election Commission of facilitating electoral victories for Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the guise of a special amendment to voter registration across the country. According to data cited by the BJP, approximately 1.3 million voters have already been removed or flagged from the electoral rolls, targeting marginalized communities and opposition voters. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi labeled this a straightforward instance of electoral fraud undermining democracy. However, the Election Commission and the BJP have dismissed these claims, asserting that the process is solely aimed at preventing illegal voting by unauthorized migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

The Congress party has spearheaded massive protests in Delhi early this week, led by Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi. In an effort to reach the Election Commission headquarters, they temporarily faced police detention after circumventing roadblocks. Rahul Gandhi indicated that he has already been named in 45 police complaints (FIRs), expressing that each complaint further emboldens their protests.

Under the Indian Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can only be removed from office with a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament. Currently, the opposition alliance holds merely 184 seats in the Lok Sabha, which comprises 543 seats altogether, leaving them with limited options but to apply public pressure for his resignation.
