Explosions Rock Riyadh Amid Houthi Missile Attacks

As plans were underway to reopen Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, the Saudi capital was shaken today by a series of powerful explosions. These disruptions come shortly after a two-week closure of the airport, which has been a critical hub for international and domestic flights.

The Saudi-led coalition announced that a massive ballistic missile and two drones, launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, were successfully intercepted by Saudi air defense systems. In light of the aerial assault, authorities have urged residents to seek shelter and issued mobile alerts warning of ongoing threats from hostile aircraft.

Just days prior, a deadly Houthi attack targeting King Khalid International Airport resulted in the tragic loss of 13 lives and left over 300 others injured. This assault is considered one of the most brutal attacks on Saudi Arabia in more than a decade, prompting the complete suspension of operations at the airport following the incident.

In a statement made amidst today's reopening of the airport and the resumption of several flights, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree warned that the airport remains a significant military target. He called for all international and local airlines, as well as passengers, to avoid using the facility, emphasizing that any incidents occurring there will be the responsibility of the Saudi leadership.

Over just the last 24 hours, the Houthis claimed to have launched a wave of attacks, targeting three airports, energy infrastructure, an oil pipeline, and a military base in Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh. Meanwhile, Saudi civil defense forces have initiated operations in response to downed missiles in regions near Mecca and Medina, although the Houthis refuted claims that these areas were targeted, calling them baseless.

The cessation of a long-standing ceasefire between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels has led to the latter seizing full control of the Red Sea coastline in recent months. This escalation poses a severe threat to stability across the broader Middle East region, exerting significant pressure on the economy, tourism, and aviation sectors of Saudi Arabia, which is the world's leading oil exporter, and affecting the global oil market as well.
