Protests Erupt in Colombo Demanding Release of Buddhist Leader
A significant protest march dubbed the ‘Freedom Foot March’ made its way to the Presidential Secretary’s Office in Colombo, rallying for the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, the Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organization, who is currently imprisoned. Tensions rose as the group arrived, prompting a significant police presence at the scene.
As the march approached the vicinity of the Presidential Secretary’s Office, security forces, including specialized task units, were deployed to ensure order in the area.
Police barricades were set up along the routes leading to the office, and key figures from the protesting Buddhist clergy engaged in a religious ceremony on the roadway in front of the premises, maintaining their protest stance.
The ‘Freedom Foot March’ began at the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and has proceeded uninterrupted over six days along the main Colombo-Nuwara Eliya route.
Having reached Kadawatha city yesterday, the marchers resumed their journey this morning (16) for the sixth and final day, eventually arriving near the Presidential Secretary’s Office in Colombo by the afternoon.
This protest follows a court ruling where the Colombo High Court convicted Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera for making statements that could harm religious harmony, sentencing him to four years in prison.
In a show of solidarity, numerous Buddhist organizations and supporters organized the protest march, calling on the government to immediately grant a pardon and release him.
