Monks Launch Protest Demanding Presidential Pardon for Leading Buddhist Figure

In a significant act of defiance, a group of monks from the Bodhu Bala Sena organization has established a makeshift camp outside the Presidential Secretary’s office, calling for President Ranil Wickremesinghe to grant a pardon to their imprisoned General Secretary, Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero. This move comes as part of a broader initiative dubbed the “Freedom Foot March.”

Arriving in Colombo after a six-day pilgrimage from Kandy, the protesting monks quickly gathered near the Presidential Secretary's office, creating a tense atmosphere marked by discontent and expectation.

Amidst the gathering, prominent monk, Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Thero, delivered a stern warning to the government, stating that dialogue or negotiations thus far have yielded no tangible benefits for the nation. “We are staying here, and even death won’t make us leave. From this moment, we are starting our fight. We are prepared to sacrifice our lives for this cause,” he asserted emphatically.

Currently, the area around the Presidential Secretary's office is fortified with special police security and road barriers, as strict security measures have been activated to maintain order.

As part of their protest, the monks successfully delivered a message to the President’s Secretary, Dr. Nandika Senadheera. Acknowledging the tense environment surrounding the protest, it was reported that the President's Secretary did meet with the gathered monks to receive the message.

Following this exchange, the President's Secretary indicated that he would have an urgent discussion with the President regarding the contents of the message and promised to return with information about the government’s response.
