Massive Cyberattack Targets Binance, World’s Largest Cryptocurrency Exchange
The cryptocurrency landscape has been rattled by a staggering cyberattack on Binance, the world’s largest and most prominent cryptocurrency exchange, resulting in the temporary suspension of deposits and withdrawals totaling approximately $6.3 billion, as reported by the Financial Times.
This incident is being regarded as one of the most serious and substantial security breaches in the history of digital assets, according to the newspaper.
In an official statement, Binance confirmed that the total impact of the cyberattack is estimated to be around $6.3 billion. However, the platform acted swiftly and in collaboration with blockchain partners, managing to secure approximately $3 billion in stolen assets to date.
Initial investigations revealed that hackers gained unauthorized access to the internal service platform through a security flaw in the laptop of one of the company's software engineering team members, allowing them to issue unauthorized withdrawal commands. Binance assured users that no personal passwords of clients had been compromised during the incident.
In a related development, Paoulo Ardoino, the head of prominent digital currency company Tether, indicated that hackers acted swiftly to freeze approximately $1.547 billion worth of USDT assets from the stolen funds. Additionally, Circle, the second-largest stablecoin issuer, has taken steps to freeze assets worth $800 million.
The founder of Binance communicated through his 'X' account that all customer deposits remain secure amidst the turmoil.
However, the news of this massive theft has provoked significant volatility in the global cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin prices dropping by 3.2% and the value of Binance’s BNB token plummeting by 7.5%. Earlier today, Polymarket, another popular trading platform, temporarily suspended its transactions due to a similar cyber threat.
Founded in 2017, Binance has grown to manage over $140 billion in digital assets, making it the largest cryptocurrency company in the world. Nevertheless, the company’s founder, Changpeng Zhao, was forced to step down from leadership in 2023 following an agreement with U.S. authorities over allegations related to anti-money laundering violations. He received a presidential pardon from former President Donald Trump last year.
Recent years have seen a sharp increase in cyberattacks targeting cryptocurrency exchanges, with data from Chainalysis indicating that hackers from North Korea are responsible for the theft of $2.02 billion in crypto assets last year alone, including $1.5 billion from Bybit. In April, hackers also managed to steal $280 million from a company called Drift.
