Sri Lankan Delegation Stranded in Riyadh Amid Appeals for Death Row Inmate
A team of four Sri Lankan representatives, tasked with finalizing a legal appeal for a death-row inmate, Anojan Sivaharasa, is currently stranded in Riyadh due to flight suspensions. Their plight has been reported by The Sunday Times, noting that they are unable to return home following a series of missile and drone attacks on Riyadh’s international airport.
Led by Additional Solicitor General Asard Nawavi, the delegation includes prominent legal figures such as Presidential Counsel Faizer Mustapha, Presidential Counsel Uplul Kumarapperuma, and attorney Hafiz Faris. After preparing and finalizing the necessary appeal documents, they had intended to fly back yesterday.
The airport in Riyadh was effectively shut down following the attacks, with SriLankan Airlines suspending flights to the city until October 18. As a result, the delegation found themselves unable to depart.
Although the representatives considered exiting the country via neighboring borders to reach Sri Lanka, they have temporarily shelved that idea due to the considerable distance involved.
In a statement to The Sunday Times, Asard Nawavi emphasized that all documentation pertinent to the appeal has been completed and expressed optimism that they would receive a favorable response regarding the clemency petition. This appeal must be lodged by October 14.
A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the cost associated with filing this appeal amounts to approximately 6.6 million rupees, and the overall expenses incurred so far tally up to around 9 million rupees. He noted that while the government typically does not allocate funds for individual cases, it intervened in this special humanitarian circumstance.
Furthermore, Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Amir Ajwad, reportedly visited the Dhammam Central Prison, located approximately 450 kilometers from Riyadh, to meet Sivaharasa during the delegation's visit this past Thursday.
