Call to Abolish VAT on Essential Educational Supplies and Food for School Children

In a written appeal, Namal Rajapaksha, a Member of Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, has urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to eliminate the Value Added Tax (VAT) and other taxes imposed on essential educational supplies and nutritious food items for school children in the upcoming 2027 budget.

Rajapaksha highlighted the pressing need for direct tax relief to low- and middle-income families against the backdrop of rising educational and living costs faced by households. His letter to the President emphasizes the necessity of supporting families struggling to afford schooling expenses.

Recalling the promises made by the National People's Power during the previous presidential election, Rajapaksha reminded that there was a commitment to revoke the VAT on school-related items and food. He pointed out that such relief would align with prior assurances aimed at alleviating the financial burden on families.

Additionally, he referenced the policy declaration for the 2024 presidential election, which proposed introducing a zero percent (0%) VAT rate on essential goods and services. Rajapaksha is advocating for a comprehensive review of the current tax burdens on the specified items, urging steps to abolish these taxes entirely in accordance with the commitments made.
