Special Army Team Deployed to Secure 'Agbo' the Elephant Amidst Suspected Shooting Incident

Concerns for the safety of Agbo, an elephant, have intensified following reports of a shooting incident circulating on social media. In response, a special operations team from the army has been dispatched to quickly locate the elephant and ensure its protection.

This action follows a crucial discussion between the Minister of Environment and the Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. The government has recognized the national necessity to protect wildlife assets, prompting the deployment of the military team to expedite search operations in coordination with relevant state institutions.

Recent social media updates indicated that Agbo has allegedly been targeted in a shooting incident in the Sipipkulama area, leading to the elephant disappearing into the forest following the attack. This situation has prompted public outcry, with residents urging authorities to take immediate action to safeguard the animal's life.

However, the Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Ranjan Marasinghe, stated that no official reports confirming a second shooting incident involving Agbo have come forth. He emphasized that the last recorded sighting of the elephant was on Friday, October 16, in the Thirappane area, noting that no signs of a shooting had been observed during that time.
