Suspect Fleeing Indian Custody Arrested in Sri Lanka
A man who was captured by the Indian Navy while attempting to smuggle 337 kilograms of heroin into India has been apprehended once again after fleeing from custody. Initially detained in a Kochi prison, the suspect managed to escape, prompting a significant manhunt.
Following his escape, he returned to Sri Lanka and was hiding in the Vennappuwa area, where he was subsequently arrested by local police. The authorities presented him to the Marawila Magistrate's Court, after which he was remanded in custody.
However, after being released on bail, the suspect again escaped while appearing before the court, slipping away from the custody of prison officials.
According to police sources, following his escape from the Indian facility, an international 'Red Notice' was issued through Interpol at the request of the Indian government.
Intelligence reports later indicated that the suspect was hiding in a rented house in the Wadduwa area. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, a police team surrounded the location and successfully arrested him early yesterday morning.
The suspect is expected to be handed over to the Indian government under the Extradition Law, while further investigations are underway by the Galgamuwa Division Crime Investigation Unit regarding this incident.
