Heavy Rains Cause Severe Flooding in Nuwara Eliya

Severe weather conditions in the Nuwara Eliya area have led to intense rainfall and consequential flooding, particularly affecting the Nuwara Eliya – Hattam main road.

At the Carliback junction along the Nanu Oya – Raddella short road, water levels rose to unprecedented heights, completely halting traffic for approximately two hours and disrupting the daily lives of local residents.

Continuous heavy rain has submerged several routes in the Kelsey and Maha Eliya plantations, further aggravating the situation.

By morning, the water levels near the Carliback junction had notably decreased, allowing limited traffic flow through the area amidst challenging conditions, although the region remains covered in thick mud.

Additionally, on October 18, heavy and persistent rainfall led to flooding in the Desford area of Nanu Oya.

The flooding has forced many residents to evacuate their homes and seek shelter with relatives, significantly disrupting their everyday lives.

This flooding has also caused damage to several riverbanks and smaller water bodies in the vicinity.

The urban flooding situation in the Nuwara Eliya – Nanu Oya region has escalated into a serious problem. Local residents emphasize that unauthorized and poorly planned constructions obstructing rivers, ponds, and natural waterways are primarily responsible for these flood emergencies.

As a result of these obstructions, water from heavy rains rapidly flows into residential areas, leading to substantial damage, community members have noted.
