High-Profile Testimony in Media Abduction Case Unfolds in Court

In a dramatic courtroom session, former LTTE member and key witness, Sumithipal Suresh Kumar, commonly known as 'Murali', provided compelling evidence regarding the abduction and disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda. His testimony took center stage at the Colombo High Court located on Vijayarama Mawatha.

The proceedings, presided over by Judge Nayana Senewiratne, along with judges Nalin Hewawasam and Lakmali Hewawasam, delved into the intricate details surrounding the case.

Suresh Kumar acknowledged having a close, brotherly relationship with Eknaligoda, revealing that this bond was known to senior figures of the LTTE, including Tamilchelvan, intelligence second-in-command Gnanavel, and senior leader Pottu Amman.

In response to queries raised by attorney Asith Siriwardena, representing the second defendant, Kumar discussed discussions surrounding a missile attack targeting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He clarified that Pottu Amman was informed about the missile plan prior to any related statements made to him.

During a follow-up examination by Deputy Solicitor General Wasantha Perera, Kumar elaborated on the context of his conversations with Eknaligoda. He recounted, "We both discussed that even though the war was over, not all issues would be resolved. At that point, he commented that it could change today; we inquired how that might happen. He said that if the President and ministers all boarded the same flight and a missile was launched at that time, then it would all be over."

However, when questioned about his interpretation of those comments, Kumar clarified that Eknaligoda referred to the hypothetical scenario as a mere example illustrating his conversational style.

In a notable development, Major General (Retd) Suresh Saley, the former head of the state intelligence service and the 90th witness in the case, was brought before the court under specialized police protection. Deputy Solicitor General Perera sought details regarding the management of telephone records, documents, and intelligence information within the intelligence unit. Saley confirmed that using phone lines registered under other individuals for operational purposes is standard practice, aimed at ensuring the confidentiality of intelligence reports and the safety of officers involved. He further clarified that independent officers manage these records without direct intervention from the executive board.

After careful consideration of the presented evidence, the three-judge panel of the High Court has postponed the trial proceedings until October 22, granting freedom to witnesses numbered 53 to 58 during this interim period.
