National Dialogue on Education Reform Launched by Minister Harini Amarasuriya
The future trajectory of a nation is fundamentally determined by its educational landscape, a sentiment echoed by Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. She emphasized the crucial role of the media in facilitating a national dialogue around new educational reforms, ensuring that these significant changes reach the citizenry.
At a recent event held at the Araliyagaha Mandiraya, the official launch of the 'RIES' (Reform Information & Enquiry Service) website took center stage. This platform aims to effectively communicate accurate information about the upcoming educational reforms to the public. It will also assist media representatives in disseminating essential updates regarding the reform processes.
The website, designed specifically to convey accurate information about the reforms, was inaugurated in the presence of the Prime Minister. Citizens can access the initiative by visiting https://edureformfact.moe.gov.lk, which serves as a resource for addressing public queries related to educational reforms.
In her remarks, the Prime Minister described this endeavor as more than just a curriculum change; it represents a comprehensive transformation of the entire educational system. She stressed that the future of the country relies heavily on the foundation of quality education, viewing this reform as a national obligation that extends beyond the confines of the Ministry of Education.
The reform initiative will commence with Grade 1 in 2026 and will progressively introduce changes to the curriculum in Grade 6 by 2027. Various preparatory efforts, such as teacher training, infrastructure development, and digitization, are already underway to ensure the education system is adequately equipped for these reforms.
Recognizing the need for a positive discourse around educational changes, the Prime Minister pointed out that while diverse political views might exist, it is vital that children's education does not become a political battleground.
Professor Prabath Jayasinghe, chairman of the Public Awareness Committee on Educational Reforms, elaborated on the significant transformations expected within the educational sector through these reforms. He noted that the focus has shifted from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered one, promoting experiential learning rooted in real-world contexts.
This initiative is not merely about academics; it aims to ensure holistic development by fostering emotional, social, physical, and ethical growth among students.
As part of the 21st-century skills framework, the reform will enhance fundamental literacies (technical, financial, media, and scientific), interpersonal skills (critical thinking and communication), and value systems among students.
The reform also seeks to create a comprehensive pathway that interlinks general education, vocational training, and tertiary education, ensuring that no child is left behind up to Grade 13.
By moving away from traditional examination methods that primarily assess memory, the new approach will focus on continuous assessment of students’ analytical, creative, and problem-solving capabilities.
A lively discussion on proposed changes within the educational reform was held among senior media personnel, journalists, and educational experts at the event.
Notable attendees included State Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Madura Senavirathna, State Minister of Vocational Training, Nalin Hewage, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwawela, Director General of the National Education Institution, O.G. Dayarathna, Additional Secretary of the Education Reform Division, Wasana Edirisinghe, along with members of the national committee on educational reforms and ministry officials.
