Government Investigates Threatening Social Media Accounts
In a significant revelation within Parliament, Minister of Public Security, Ananda Wejapaksha, indicated the existence of a network of fraudulent social media accounts disseminating hostile statements on both national and international levels. This statement was made in response to a verbal inquiry by a Member of Parliament.
Addressing the issue, the Minister disclosed that investigations into these accounts, which mimic individuals from various ethnic backgrounds, are currently underway by the Cyber Crime Investigation Division. These accounts have been linked to a series of derogatory and inflammatory remarks aimed at inciting discord.
Furthermore, the Minister highlighted that details regarding several such incidents have already been submitted to the judiciary for further examination.
Expanding on the concerning trend, Wejapaksha noted, "In the past, nationalism and religious sectarianism have become entrenched within our political culture as tools for gaining and retaining power. Despite some attempts to resurrect such divisive actions recently, we have not allowed any room for tolerance towards them. The current government will not permit any form of nationalist or religious conspiracy that could jeopardize national unity."
The Minister also requested a week's time to provide a comprehensive and structured response to the parliamentary inquiry, based on the findings of ongoing investigations.
