Protests Erupt Over Deteriorating Road Conditions in Diyagama East

In a fervent demonstration on October 26, tea plantation workers and local residents of Diyagama East gathered to call for urgent repairs to the roads leading into their area. The protest, held amidst inclement weather, highlighted the deteriorating state of the road, which has been severely affected by recent heavy rains.

Floods caused by the recent "Ditwa" cyclone have further exacerbated the issue, leading to sections of the road being washed away. In response to what has become a pressing concern, community members and vehicle owners, coming together in solidarity, pooled their resources to temporarily repair the road.

According to the protesters, continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has resulted in total washouts of the previously patched sections, thereby completely halting vehicular movement along this vital route.

The current condition of the road has become so dire that it is only passable by three-wheeled vehicles. This has put significant strain on vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, schoolchildren, and other local residents who rely on this route for their daily activities. The protesters expressed their frustration, noting that the damaged sections cannot be restored by the public and called for immediate attention from responsible officials. They urged for repairs to be conducted in a manner that mitigates the risk of future washouts.
