Patients Facing Financial Burden Due to Cancer Medication Shortages in Sri Lanka

Patients undergoing treatment for cancer are struggling to access essential medications due to significant shortages in government hospitals, leading to excessive costs for those forced to purchase their prescriptions from private pharmacies. This alarming situation was highlighted by Dr. Chamath Sanjeewa, the president of the Medical Professional Association for Civil Rights, who called attention to the plight of these patients.

Many patients requiring long-term care for cancer are incurring expenses that exceed one million rupees per month on external medications. Some of these drugs are not even registered in the country, adding to the urgency of the situation.

Dr. Sanjeewa pointed out that the financial constraints caused by having to spend large amounts of money on cancer medications are severely impacting the quality of life for these vulnerable patients. Families are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain their daily living expenses while managing the high costs of cancer treatment.

In response to this critical issue, Dr. Sanjeewa has urged the President to immediately facilitate the procurement and distribution of life-saving medications for cancer patients through the medical supply chain, emphasizing the need for prompt action to address this urgent healthcare crisis.
