Police Deny Assault Claims Amid Controversy Surrounding Colombo Monk's Hospitalization

The Sri Lankan police have categorically rejected claims circulating on social media that an assault was inflicted upon Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thera during the ongoing Satyagraha at the Viharamaha Devi Park in Colombo. Asserting the accuracy of their assessment, they confirmed that the monk was discharged from the hospital approximately one hour after receiving treatment.

Dr. Sampath Indika Kumara, Director of the Colombo National Hospital, provided details regarding the incident, stating that the monk was admitted to the Emergency Unit at roughly 8:30 PM. Following a thorough examination by a team of specialists, multiple tests including blood work, X-rays, and an ultrasound were conducted.

Dr. Kumara affirmed that none of the tests indicated any internal injuries or severe harm. Due to reported trauma to the head, doctors initially recommended that he be monitored overnight as a precautionary measure.

However, the monk opted to leave the hospital around 9:30 PM, indicating that he did not require further treatment.

In an official statement to the media, Police Spokesperson Frederick Wuttler clarified that the monk's hospitalization resulted from him slipping and falling rather than any act of police violence. He noted that certain factions have taken to social media to propagate false information, inciting public outrage and unrest, and emphasized that the police would take strict legal action against those disseminating misleading claims.
