Severe Shortages at Tangalle and Thissamaharama Hospitals Impact Patient Care

Patients at Tangalle Basic Hospital and Thissamaharama Basic Hospital are facing immense challenges due to inadequate facilities in their intensive care units. Dr. Chamath Sanjeewa, President of the Medical Professionals' Association for Medical and Civil Rights, highlighted that the lack of proper development in these essential healthcare units is placing significant pressure on both medical staff and patients.

Although there was a clear development plan in place for the improvement of Tangalle Basic Hospital, the scheme has stalled due to inefficiencies among health ministry officials, as pointed out by Dr. Sanjeewa.

Being the largest basic hospital in the Southern Province, Tangalle's facility lacks a permanent intensive care unit, forcing it to operate temporarily in an area currently designated for a cafeteria. This situation severely hampers the ability of the staff to provide adequate medical treatment to patients.

Similarly, Thissamaharama Basic Hospital also suffers from the absence of an intensive care unit, which puts considerable strain on specialists trying to deliver care to their patients, according to Dr. Sanjeewa.

As a result of these limitations, a growing number of patients are being directed to Tangalle and Hambantota hospitals, exacerbating the issues for the already overwhelmed medical personnel and further inconveniencing the population in need of healthcare.
