Ranil Wickremesinghe Urges Modern Political Strategies for Electoral Success
Former president and leader of the United National Party (UNP), Ranil Wickremesinghe, asserted that mere collaboration between the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is insufficient for securing electoral victories in the contemporary political landscape of Sri Lanka. During a meeting of the party's working committee held at the Sirikotha headquarters in Pitakotte, he emphasized the need for a shift away from traditional coalitions.
Wickremesinghe noted that the political framework of the country has undergone profound transformation. He warned that without efforts to attract new voters beyond conventional parameters, no political entity can advance. The reliance on outdated formulas and mere political alliances will not yield electoral success, he stressed.
To usher in a new generation of political leadership, the UNP has initiated a restructuring of its membership, unveiling two new divisions: Millennium UNP, targeted at individuals aged 35 to 40, and Gen Z UNP, representing the youth born after the year 2000. This announcement was made during the working committee meeting.
This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first instance of a political party in Sri Lanka fostering membership through distinct generational representations, according to party chairman Vajira Abeywardena.
Additionally, discussions during the meeting pivoted towards a long-term national development strategy, termed the "Green Agenda," aimed at the next 20 years, moving away from the conventionally presented five-year electoral policies.
