Benjamin Netanyahu's Coalition Loses Majority as Israel Faces Political Turmoil

In a significant shift in Israel's political landscape, Benjamin Netanyahu, who has held the position of Prime Minister longer than anyone else in the nation's history, has seen his coalition lose its parliamentary majority following the latest election results. This development has sparked intense discussions about the formation of a new government, according to reports from the Associated Press.

The Israeli parliament, consisting of 120 seats, requires a minimum of 61 for a functioning majority. Preliminary official results reveal that Netanyahu's coalition secured only 53 seats, while the main opposition coalition won 48 seats and the Arab-led parties collectively claimed 19 seats.

The 19 seats won by the Arab-led coalition stand out as a remarkable milestone in this election, marking a potential shift in the dynamics of Israeli politics.

In the wake of this electoral setback, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot and his team find themselves in a position where support from Arab parties has become essential for the ousting of Netanyahu. However, Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the right-wing party Yisrael Beiteinu, which won 7 seats, has categorically rejected any alliance with the Arab parties, labeling them as "supporters of terrorism." His stance complicates the efforts to form an opposition government, making Netanyahu's remaining in power increasingly challenging.

Immediately following the release of the election results, Netanyahu and his Likud party alleged that the Arab parties had engaged in "election theft" with external assistance. Israeli media reports have pointed towards allegations involving the Qatari government, although these claims have been dismissed as both ludicrous and dangerously inflammatory by officials in Qatar.

Dean Livne, the acting director of the Israeli Election Commission, along with the internal security agency Shin Bet, stated that the accusations are baseless and affirmed that the official results, as declared by the electorate, will not be altered.

The election results are expected to be formally certified next Wednesday and handed over to President Isaac Herzog, who will then invite a suitable leader to establish a new government. A swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected parliament is scheduled for November 10. If no coalition can be formed, Israel may be forced into another snap election in the first half of next year.

Political analysts indicate that should Netanyahu lose the premiership, he may find himself embroiled in serious legal troubles stemming from existing allegations of financial misconduct and fraud.
