Controversy Erupts Over Treatment of Buddhist Monk in Custody

The general public is up in arms following the recent court appearance of Ven. Gnanasara Thera, a revered monk of the Galagodaaththe Visharada chapter, stripped of his ceremonial robe and presented in prison attire. Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Nayaka Thera, the President of the Dimbulagala Forest Monastery, condemned the actions of the Prison Commissioner General, asserting that improper use of authority was evident in this case. He claimed that if he were in the President's seat, he would have physically reprimanded the official responsible for this decision.

During a press conference, Ven. Dimbulagala emphasized that the Prison Commissioner General must take full responsibility for this incident and issue an apology to the nation. He voiced concerns that this unprecedented move has inflamed the sentiments of the entire Buddhist community, leaving many outraged. Even the government, he noted, has suffered repercussions due to this decision.

Elaborating further, he stated, "Historically, the saffron robe is held in immense respect and pride in our country. This unilateral decision regarding Ven. Gnanasara has caused widespread anger among the Buddhist populace. It’s important to recognize that even individuals in custody retain the legal right to appear in their preferred attire in court. However, the Commissioner has acted beyond legal bounds, as highlighted by distinguished religious leaders.”

He adamantly stated, "No official has the right to misuse authority that they do not possess. If I were in a position of power, I would confront such an individual directly. Public servants, remunerated with taxpayer money, should not be granted the privilege to humiliate the Buddhist monastic order."

Moreover, he asserted that Ven. Gnanasara is not associated with any crimes such as sexual assault, murder, or fraud, highlighting the monk's significant contributions during the civil war, particularly on behalf of the people of areas like Welikanda.

“He is being punished under the law for declaring an inability to manage his life amid national crises. However, officials must not be permitted to disgrace the Sangha in this manner. If there are underlying forces behind this incident, current leaders should not be steering the country in this manner. The public expects more than complacency in governance; they demand accountability and respect,” he added.

This matter calls for immediate intervention by the President, who must facilitate a swift and fair resolution. If not addressed, the Sangha will certainly take appropriate steps to ensure their dignity is upheld, urged Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Nayaka Thera.
