Power Plant Maintenance: Norochcholai's 'Lakvijaya' Faces Technical Glitch
A technical fault has rendered the second generation unit of the 'Lakvijaya' coal power plant in Norochcholai inoperable, as announced by the Ministry of Power and Energy. This interruption, however, is not expected to impact the balance of the national electricity grid, with the ministry assuring that measures are in place to maintain uninterrupted power supply across the island.
Engineers and maintenance teams from the Ceylon Electricity Board have reportedly commenced repair work to restore the affected generating unit promptly and reintegrate it into the national grid.
On October 17, a nationwide power outage had prompted the precautionary shutdown of the three generating units at Lakvijaya, totaling 900 megawatts, in order to ensure operational safety. Following this event, a short-term power rationing was implemented to manage electricity supply effectively. After several days of stringent efforts, all three units—numbers 01, 02, and 03—were restored and brought back online on October 24.
Despite resuming full capacity, the power plant has encountered another operational fault with the second generating unit shortly after returning to service. The Lakvijaya plant plays a critical role, supplying over 40% of the country’s daily fundamental electricity needs, making its frequent disruptions a significant factor in national electricity management.
