Veterinarian Resigns Amid Allegations Following Death of "Kavantissa" Elephant

In a significant turn of events, Dr. Isuru Hevahaketi, a veterinarian from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, has submitted his resignation in the wake of allegations surrounding the recent death of the renowned elephant, Kavantissa, which occurred due to a gunshot wound.

Accusations from wildlife enthusiasts and environmentalists have arisen regarding the inadequate treatment Kavantissa received during his illness, alongside claims that the prescribed dosage of medication was exceeded. Following the tragic demise of the elephant, these allegations have intensified, with strong backlash against Hevahaketi on social media platforms and from various community factions.

Dr. Hevahaketi had previously treated other famous elephants, such as 'Theka Raja' and 'Hathiya', when they were unwell, a fact that has come under scrutiny as criticism mounts regarding his handling of Kavantissa's care.

In a separate incident, concerns grew over the disappearance of another elephant affectionately known as ‘Agbo’ from the Anuradhapura district. The Ministry of Environment reported that, with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Army, search efforts have successfully located Agbo in the forest area of Nirupadhrituwa, revealing the collaborative efforts to ensure the animal's safety.

Today, a special unified operation was launched to locate Agbo, following a request from the Minister of Environment. Under the guidance of Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyiyakonath, a specialized team from the army has joined wildlife officers in this search initiative.
