Concerns Rise as HSBC Plans to Move Global Service Centre to the Philippines
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has expressed deep concern over reports indicating that HSBC, a prominent international financial institution established in Sri Lanka, is planning to relocate its Global Service Centre to the Philippines. This move could have significant implications for the local job market and economy.
Premadasa warned that thousands of professional job opportunities available to the country's youth would be lost, resulting in a detrimental impact on the economy. He highlighted the urgency of the situation, questioning whether the government is merely watching as large foreign investments exit the country instead of taking proactive steps to attract direct foreign investments.
According to information received by him, the complete transfer of HSBC’s operations to the Philippines is slated for December 2027. This transition poses a serious risk of losing approximately 3,000 direct jobs and another 500 indirect jobs in Sri Lanka.
While hoping that these reports are unfounded, Premadasa emphasized that if the information is accurate, it would signify a severe setback for the country's economic landscape. He called for immediate attention to this issue, stressing the need for the government to act decisively to retain foreign investments and protect employment opportunities.
