Nationwide Power Outage Sparks Internal Investigation

A sudden power outage affecting the entire nation for approximately 30 seconds has raised concerns among authorities, with the National System Operator (NSO) announcing an internal inquiry into the incident. This widespread blackout, triggered by the unexpected disconnection of a primary generating unit, is not considered a routine occurrence.

Despite the outage resulting in the loss of 810 megawatts of capacity from the Norocholai coal power plant for several days, the NSO assured that measures are in place to manage electrical supply effectively, leveraging the prevailing rainy weather conditions to mitigate disruption for consumers.

On October 17 at around 11:43 AM, the national electricity grid experienced a significant imbalance after a key generator abruptly disconnected from the system. This incident culminated in a complete system shutdown across the country for less than 30 seconds.

However, efforts to restore system functionality began swiftly, with power being reintroduced in phases. By 12:11 PM, four units were linked back to the main hydroelectric power grid, allowing for the resumption of electricity supply.

The NSO noted challenges arose during the reconnection phase due to small electric generating units that are not directly controlled by the system operations center. Starting from 12:37 PM, power distribution was gradually restored, and by 3:00 PM, essential services, including major hospitals, water purification centers, and airports, had their electricity supply confirmed. By 5:00 PM, power was fully restored to all grid substations, enabling a considerable majority of consumers to regain access to electricity.

While disconnections of generating units during operations are part of standard practices for safety, the NSO emphasized that a total system failure resulting from such an event is highly unusual. Consequently, an urgent internal investigation has been launched to determine the specific sequence of events and the underlying technical causes behind this unprecedented blackout.

Additionally, due to the protective measures associated with the outage, reconnection of the Norocholai power plant to the national grid will take several days. Although this results in a temporary loss of substantial capacity, the ongoing rains in the country are expected to sustain hydroelectric generation at peak levels. With the current electricity demand remaining relatively low, officials are optimistic about effectively managing supply in a manner that minimizes impact on consumers in the coming days.
