Allegations of Police Misconduct Rise Following Youth's Death in Custody

The claim by police that a youth who was arrested in Homagama died from illness has been categorically dismissed as false. According to Pubudu Jayagoda, the education secretary of the Progressive Socialist Party, this incident is part of a disturbing trend, with 17 individuals reportedly losing their lives in police custody since the National Peoples' Power government took office.

During a press conference held in Colombo, Jayagoda raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man named Ishara. Notably, he pointed out that the youth had suffered three broken ribs and a fractured skull, questioning what specific illness could cause such severe injuries. "It is essential for the police spokesperson to clarify the nature of the alleged illness that led to these injuries," he stated.

Jayagoda further highlighted the legal requirement for individuals taken into custody to be presented before a magistrate within 24 hours. He accused the Homagama police of having arrested Ishara and allegedly killed him within just six hours of detention. "What kind of illness leads to three fractured ribs and a broken skull? We have not received any answers to these important questions," he emphasized.

He also criticized the government for allegedly preparing to enact the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Organized Crime Act, arguing that these laws would further infringe on citizens' rights. Jayagoda warned that such legislation would grant extensive powers to the executive and police to detain individuals without proper judicial oversight.

Pointing to the potential dangers of these laws, he noted that the Organized Crime Act could legitimize coerced confessions obtained through torture in police stations like Homagama, leading to a situation where citizens could face decades in prison based on flawed police statements.
