Government Faces Internal Fear Amid Opposition's No-Confidence Motion Debate

The Sri Lankan government is grappling with fears surrounding the debate on the no-confidence motion proposed against the Speaker, as internal divisions among the ruling party threaten to be exposed. S.M. Marikkar, a parliamentarian from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, indicated that the current government is set to conclude its term next year, fueling concerns about its stability.

During a media conference held in Colombo, Marikkar highlighted that government ministers have been vocal in asserting that there will be no violations of human rights or emerging international issues despite the introduction of anti-terror laws and other directives.

He emphasized the government's inability to justify attacks against innocent villagers, drawing attention to the international community's scrutiny of the government’s actions.

"If there were an Olympic event for lying, the ministers would surely win gold medals. Just because the government claims that human rights are not being violated, the recent death of a youth in police custody in Homagama is a clear violation of these rights. It is not about evading necessary questions but addressing the genuine issues facing our country," Marikkar stated.

Rejecting allegations that the opposition is fearful of repressive legislative measures, Marikkar underscored that it is the opposition's responsibility to stand against the oppression of the people. He noted that the push to delay the debate on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker is driven by a faction of government MPs who oppose him, adding, "You only have until next year to maintain this government. By next year, this government will be over," he further emphasized.
