BASF Launches Safety Kit to Protect Sri Lankan Farmers

A national program aimed at introducing the BASF Sanrakshan Kit protective clothing set was launched in Nuwara Eliya under the stewardship of Dr. Tushara Vikramarachchi, the Director General of Agriculture, on October 28. This initiative is focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of farmers while they use pesticides, minimizing health risks associated with agricultural practices.

The program highlights the dangers faced by farmers who use pesticides without following proper safety protocols, including the risk of poisoning, various health issues, and potential life-threatening situations. The importance of adhering to safety measures was a significant point underscored during the event.

Alongside the introduction of the safety kit, Dr. Vikramarachchi also delivered a lecture on safety guidelines that farmers should follow when utilizing pesticides. He stressed the need for farmers to pay close attention to their health and safety while handling these chemicals, pointing out that improper use can lead to toxic exposure, health complications, and even life-threatening risks.

Wearing standardized protective clothing, following the instructions on product labels, and adhering to recommended safety protocols were emphasized as essential practices for farmers during pesticide application.

Dr. Vikramarachchi further explained that safety goes beyond individual health, stressing the necessity for proper cleaning of clothes and equipment exposed to pesticides. He advised that these items should be stored securely in places inaccessible to children and kept separate from food and beverages to safeguard family members.

Moreover, he highlighted that thorough cleaning of hands and any exposed body parts after pesticide use, washing clothes separately, and preventing chemical runoff into water sources are critical steps to ensure not only the health of farmers but also that of their families and the surrounding environment.

With an urgent need identified for distributing verified safety clothing kits in the country, BASF has taken the initiative to collaborate with the Department of Agriculture in this endeavor, filling the gap left by the absence of a designated institution for this purpose.

Ajith Vikramasekara, the Managing Director of BASF Lanka, shared that under the organization’s sponsorship, plans are in place to distribute these protective clothing kits free of charge to 4,500 farmers across the country, while simultaneously raising awareness about safe practices in pesticide use.

This introductory program was attended by a distinguished group of officials, including Dr. J.A. Sumith, Additional Director General (Research) of the Department of Agriculture, Jayalath Bandara, the Central Province Agriculture Director, and representatives from various agricultural agencies.
