Media Organizations Raise Alarms Over Safety of Sandhya Ekneligoda Amidst Rising Hostility
The recent arrest of Venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero has triggered a hostile atmosphere, particularly towards Sandhya Ekneligoda, the wife of the missing journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda. Leading media organizations in Sri Lanka have come together to condemn the inflammatory and violent rhetoric that has surfaced, specifically targeting her.
In a press statement, these organizations highlighted the severe risks to Ekneligoda's life posed by the surge in hostility generated through these hate-filled propaganda campaigns. They underscored that such an environment endangers not only individual safety but further exacerbates the already rampant culture of political violence in the country.
The media groups recalled that Gnanasara Thero was sentenced to six years in prison in 2018 for attempting to intimidate a magistrate during proceedings on Prageeth Ekneligoda's abduction case. This attempt to undermine the judicial process has far-reaching implications for the rule of law in Sri Lanka.
The appeal concerning this conviction was made to the Court of Appeal, where Sandhya Ekneligoda was represented as an aggrieved party. Significantly, the Supreme Court invalidated the presidential pardon that had previously released Gnanasara Thero, declaring it contrary to law, thereby reinstating the legal consequences of his actions. The media coalition emphasized that Sandhya Ekneligoda holds no culpability that would justify any threat to her safety.
The statement also asserted that freedom of expression must never serve as a pretext for threatening, harassing, or inciting violence against individuals or communities. Referring to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), it reiterated that such inflammatory statements are prohibited by law.
In light of the 16-year struggle for justice for her missing husband, the organizations urged immediate action to ensure Sandhya Ekneligoda’s safety. They called on authorities to protect the integrity of the legal system and prevent further escalation of the situation. Additionally, they demand that political and religious leaders reject all attempts to exploit national and religious sensitivities for gain.
This united statement has seen endorsements from several prominent organizations, including the Free Media Movement (FMM), the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA), the Federation of Media Employees Trade Unions (FMETU), South Asian Women in Media (SWAM), the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum (SLMMF), and the Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance (SLTMA).
