Minister Emphasizes Long-term Strategy for Developing Sports Talent in Sri Lanka
The persistent failure of Sri Lankan sports teams to achieve competitive success boils down to a lack of adequately trained athletes, according to Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Damunupola. He advocates for the implementation of a long-term strategy aimed at nurturing new talent from the grassroots level.
During a media briefing, the Minister pointed out that it is unrealistic to expect the emergence of skilled athletes within a mere month or two following a government's appointment. He emphasized that the prolonged damage inflicted on the sports sector over the past decade, due to widespread disruptions in the country, has had significant repercussions.
In response to these challenges, the government is already in the process of enhancing infrastructure and initiating training programs for aspiring athletes, although he acknowledged that this effort will require time to bear fruit.
Commenting specifically on the stagnation in cricket, Damunupola revealed plans to present a new bill to Parliament based on recommendations from the Cricket Transformation Committee. This legislation aims to revamp the existing administration and establish a new governing body, thereby fostering a more competitive environment for cricket in the country.
Additionally, the Minister clarified matters concerning the Asian Games and the operations of the Sri Lanka Amateur Sports Federation. He noted that the lack of opportunities for several talented athletes is partly attributed to internal issues within the Federation, which has increasingly contributed to the stagnation of sports development in Sri Lanka.
Revealing that three members of the selection committee had resigned due to internal discord, the Minister stated that the government is committed to taking decisive action in the future regarding the Amateur Sports Federation to facilitate the growth of sports in the country.
