Former Minister Calls for Transparency in Fuel Pricing Formula
In a bold move, former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka is urging the government to immediately disclose the formula used for determining fuel prices in Sri Lanka. His call follows a stark revelation concerning the disparity between import costs from the Singapore port and the retail prices in the local market.
Taking to social media, Ranawaka highlighted a significant gap that emerges when assessing fuel costs based on the dollar being valued at 330 Sri Lankan Rupees. He pointed out that current Import (FOB) prices do not align with the prices consumers are being charged at the pumps.
The data he presented outlines the current fuel pricing structure as follows:
- Petrol 92: The imported cost stands at Rs. 292 (USD 141 per barrel), while the selling price in Sri Lanka is Rs. 414.
- Petrol 95: The import cost is Rs. 305 (USD 147 per barrel), but it is sold for Rs. 475 locally.
- Auto Diesel: The imported price is Rs. 350 (USD 169 per barrel), with a local selling price of Rs. 392.
- Super Diesel: The cost for importation is Rs. 367 (USD 177 per barrel), whereas the selling price is substantially higher at Rs. 528.
- Kerosene Oil: This is priced at Rs. 213 per liter (USD 103 per barrel).
Ranawaka emphasized the necessity for the government to make public the exact fuel pricing formula, stressing that this transparency is vital for the awareness of the public, including motorbike, three-wheeler, and bus operators who are feeling the financial strain.
Furthermore, he insists that responsibility lies with relevant sectors to clarify the substantial profits gained from selling firewood oil to the Ceylon Electricity Board at Rs. 210, urging immediate action to address public concerns surrounding this issue.
*Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
