Minister Vows Strict Legal Action Against Destabilizing Forces
In a robust response to the recent arrest of revered monk Galagodaaththe Gnanasara, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, emphasized the government's commitment to enforce the law with maximum strictness against any factions aiming to disrupt national stability. He asserted that efforts to incite public disorder would be met with firm legal action.
Wijepala also disclosed that intelligence agencies are currently conducting specialized investigations and collecting information regarding individuals and groups seeking to create unrest. He clarified that the government would not tolerate any breach of law or acts of violence under any circumstances.
Addressing concerns over public protests, the Minister highlighted that peaceful demonstrations conducted democratically would not face any restrictions from the government. He reassured that irrespective of the length or duration of such protests, the current administration would uphold the right to peaceful assembly, provided it does not disrupt the lives of citizens.
On the issue of Gnanasara's detention and the concerns surrounding his right to wear religious robes in prison, Wijepala mentioned that the President has appointed a special committee to investigate the matter and take appropriate steps. He further affirmed that the President is determined to operate strictly within the framework of judicial decisions.
Moreover, he noted that past presidential pardons granted outside the law during previous administrations had been nullified by the Supreme Court, reinforcing the current government's adherence to legal principles.
