Critical Drug Shortages Threaten Lives of Cancer Patients in Sri Lanka
The health sector's failure to provide life-saving medications via government hospital systems has placed cancer patients at serious risk, with many forced to spend over ten million rupees to purchase medications privately. This alarming situation was disclosed by Dr. Chamila Sanjeewa, president of the Association of Medical and Civil Rights Professionals.
Essential drugs like ‘IV Atezolizumab (1200 mg)’ and ‘IV Bevacizumab (500 mg)’, part of the modern monoclonal antibody treatment protocols successfully used worldwide for cancer treatment, are notably absent from the local health system. Dr. Sanjeewa highlighted that this lack of availability is contributing significantly to the plight of patients battling cancer.
Despite government assertions of possessing sufficient financial resources, he raised questions about why institutions such as the Apeksha Hospital, Ministry of Health, Medical Supplies Division (MSD), and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority have failed to facilitate the procurement of these critical drugs for public hospitals.
Concerns have emerged regarding whether the absence of drug imports into government hospitals and the resultant reliance on private markets at exorbitant prices is due to the influence of a pharmaceutical mafia and kickback schemes. Dr. Sanjeewa expressed apprehension that officials may fear losing advantages tied to obsolete medications if modern treatments are introduced.
He emphasized that receiving the best medical treatment is a fundamental human right. Patients expecting care from government health institutions face demoralizing scenarios, with derogatory remarks suggesting that they have no hope of receiving effective medication, leading them to despair regarding their survival. He noted that the closure of the Ministry of Health’s doors has stifled voices rising against such injustices.
Dr. Sanjeewa called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Health Minister Dr. Nalin de Silva Jayatissa to urgently address these critical issues. He also insisted on the necessity for an independent investigation into the negligence of responsible officials. He stressed that this crisis extends beyond mere political vendettas and calls for accountability for failings that endanger the lives of the vulnerable population.
He concluded by asserting that the destitute are not dying from cancer itself, but rather from the denial of appropriate and high-quality medications. Urgent action is required to ensure that these patients, who are unable to afford the steep costs of medications from private hospitals or pharmacies, receive justice and necessary treatments without any delay.
