US Government Moves to Ban Chinese AI Software Over Security Concerns
The United States government is taking significant action against the Chinese technology company DeepSeek, mandating the immediate removal of its artificial intelligence software from a majority of federal institutions due to national security concerns. This directive, issued by the Department of Homeland Security, affects a vast network of civil federal agencies, including the Departments of the Treasury, State, and Justice.
This restriction has been quietly enforced since late July, with an official announcement by the Department of Homeland Security released just last Monday. The decision underscores rising apprehensions regarding the potential risks posed by Chinese AI technologies within the U.S. government.
DeepSeek’s AI model, which operates as an open-source technology accessible for free or at low costs, has recently emerged as a significant player in the global AI race. It offers a budget-friendly alternative for software developers compared to the expensive, proprietary models such as Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, or OpenAI’s Codex.
While OpenAI reportedly invested around $100 million in developing its leading GPT-4 model, DeepSeek created its core model for a mere $6 million. Users have noted that the latest version of DeepSeek's technology has managed to outperform even advanced tools developed by OpenAI in complex tasks such as computer coding.
This ban comes against the backdrop of heightened scrutiny on Chinese AI technology by top American tech companies during the administration of former President Donald Trump, who has emphasized China's role as the primary adversary in securing leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.
Michael Kratcious, a technology advisor at the White House, raised alarms through an internal memo, alleging that American AI advancements are being inappropriately leveraged and manipulated by Chinese firms. In the coming months, major American companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which are preparing for stock market entries, face challenges as they claim that Chinese firms, including DeepSeek, have stolen and copied their foundational technologies.
