Prime Minister Amarasuriya Discusses IMF Cooperation and Foreign Policy Amidst Regional Conflicts
Amidst previous criticisms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has clarified that the government’s decision to move forward with the IMF was driven by the lack of alternatives for the country. This statement came during a special interview with Richard Quest on CNN's 'Quest Means Business'.
Reflecting on Sri Lanka's past challenges with IMF collaborations, Amarasuriya acknowledged her initial reluctance; however, she noted that the agreement had already been signed when the new government took office.
Following her government’s accession to power, discussions with IMF officials allowed them to articulate their challenges. She emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining good governance, combating corruption, and enforcing strict fiscal discipline, which aligned with the IMF’s stipulations, leading to the decision to continue with the program.
Highlighting the government’s priorities, she stated that maintaining stability in the country post-election and proving the new administration’s competence were paramount objectives.
Addressing ongoing regional military conflicts, the Prime Minister expressed her views on Sri Lanka's foreign policy. She firmly stated that such wars yield no benefits for any party and reiterated the country’s commitment to ensuring peace within the region while actively seeking to avoid any involvement in foreign conflicts.
Noting the rising costs of fuel and energy as a pressing crisis for an economy like Sri Lanka's, she characterized the situation as unfortunate.
When questioned about potential constitutional amendments, Amarasuriya remarked that the current constitution has been amended 22 times, highlighting inherent flaws that demand attention. She articulated the urgent need for a new constitutional reform, focusing on tackling the root causes of conflicts, ensuring transparency, and fostering inclusive development.
The Prime Minister’s insights underline the government's strategic focus on navigating economic challenges while engaging with both international financial institutions and regional stability efforts.
