Concerns Arise Over Safety as Train Services Resume on Colombo-Peredeniya Route
The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Association has raised serious concerns regarding the commencement of train operations without proper authorization from the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) following the devastation caused by the 'Dithwa' cyclone.
Train services on the Colombo-Kotuwa to Peredeniya and Gampola route, which were suspended for nearly ten months due to significant damage from the cyclone, resumed on February 2. However, just two days into the operation, the first office train traveling from Peredeniya to Colombo-Kotuwa faced an emergency this morning (5) when a landslide involving soil and rocks obstructed the tracks in the Kadigamuwa and Gangoda area.
During a media briefing, Kasun Chamara Jayasekara, the General Secretary of the Railway Station Masters' Association, emphasized that had the water drainage system along the railway line been properly maintained, the risk of debris falling onto the tracks could have been mitigated to a considerable extent.
He further underlined the gravity of resuming train operations on this route without the necessary approval or inspection report from the NBRO, describing the situation as extremely hazardous. The Secretary stressed that there are significant risks of similar landslides at two other locations along the route, urging the railway department and relevant authorities to conduct swift investigations and take immediate action to ensure the safety of passengers.
