Sri Lanka Experiences Significant Deficit in Foreign Mobile Account Balance

In a troubling update from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the nation has recorded a deficit of USD 420 million in its foreign mobile account balance from January to September this year. This stark contrast follows a surplus of USD 1,853 million reported during the same period last year, highlighting a significant shift in the financial landscape.

The sharp increase in import expenditures, outpacing the growth of export revenues, has been cited as a primary factor contributing to this deficit. Although there has been a considerable rise in remittances, other sectors such as tourism and the information technology industry have experienced declines, directly impacting the overall balance.

Data from the Central Bank reveals that total import expenses surged to USD 18,666 million during the first nine months of this year, a notable increase of 21.3% compared to the USD 15,390 million recorded in 2025.

During the same timeframe, export revenue reached USD 10,754 million, reflecting a modest growth of merely 5.3% from USD 10,215 million noted in the previous year. As a result, the trade deficit ballooned from USD 5,174 million in 2025 to USD 7,912 million this year, showcasing a rapid expansion.

Tourism revenues also took a hit, generating USD 2,245 million over the first nine months, which is a 9.2% decline compared to the USD 2,473 million achieved in 2025.

Moreover, income from the IT and BPO sectors has dropped considerably, falling from USD 621 million to USD 525 million, marking a decrease of 15.5%. Consequently, the total earnings from the services account exhibit a slight downward trend to USD 5,257 million, down 0.6% year-on-year.

In contrast, remittances from foreign workers have shown a remarkable rise, with inflows reaching USD 6,865 million during the first nine months, an increase of 18.1% from USD 5,812 million reported last year.

While August 2026 saw a surplus of USD 134 million in the foreign mobile account, a deficit of USD 128 million was recorded in September. This represents an improvement compared to the USD 194 million deficit reported in September 2025, indicating a relative reduction in the financial shortfall.
