Rising Fuel Taxes Burden Sri Lankan Public, Critiques from Politician

The increased tax on fuel, now surpassing the previous rates, is taking a toll on the general populace, emphasized Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party. Speaking during a parliamentary discussion among fellow lawmakers, he expressed concern over the government's fiscal policies.

Rajapaksa pointed out the contradictory nature of recent government measures. While the administration has provided slight relief on fuel prices, it simultaneously imposed higher taxes, effectively neutralizing any benefit to the public. "They promised to lessen the tax burden on fuel, but instead, they've raised it. Ultimately, it's the people who suffer under these pressures," he remarked.

He also highlighted how the rising costs of essential goods, including milk powder and other staples, continue to compound the financial strain on households, adding to the overall cost of living. "While necessary expenses increase, wages remain stagnant, making life harder for the average citizen," he stated.

Despite claims from government ministers that there is no shortage of gas or fuel, Rajapaksa pointed out that public discourse reflects otherwise. "In rural areas and cities alike, conversations about gas and fuel shortages are prevalent. It's evident that people's experiences tell a different story," he added.

Querying the government's response to these economic challenges, he questioned whether it would merely resort to imposing more taxes or resort to the usual tactic of launching investigations into alleged corruption. "Is the administration merely fabricating evidence to suppress dissent? The reality is that not only the opposition but also the general public feels oppressed by current conditions," he remarked.

Rajapaksa asserted that the government has failed to implement effective strategies to lower the cost of living over the past two years. He criticized the lack of actions to stabilize household finances and reduce educational expenses for schoolchildren. With inflation already exceeding 8%, he warned that the situation is worsening month by month.
