Tragic Poisoning Incident Claims Lives of Couple in Nuwara Eliya
In a heartbreaking incident in the Meepilimana area of Nuwara Eliya, a couple residing in a temporary accommodation on a rental basis tragically lost their lives early Monday morning due to suspected poisoning. This was confirmed by Chandra Basnayake, the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Nuwara Eliya.
The couple, originally from the Avissawella area, was staying in temporary quarters near a hotel under construction in Meepilimana, where they were involved in the ongoing building work. According to the police, they had taken residence close to the hotel site until its completion.
Reports indicate that the couple fell asleep while cooking over a barbecue in their room, an activity common in the cold weather conditions of Nuwara Eliya. Concerned relatives attempted to reach them via phone on Monday morning but received no response. Alarmed by the situation, they informed the local Grama Sevaka (village officer), who subsequently visited the house and discovered the couple unresponsive.
Authorities revealed that the deceased man was a 52-year-old father, while his wife was 46. Further investigations are underway as the police work to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
