Customs Seize Illegal Drone Shipment at Katunayake Airport
In a significant enforcement action, Sri Lanka Customs has taken custody of 42 drones and 16 microphones at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, suspected of being imported unlawfully. The items were confiscated while being processed through the airport's cargo terminal.
Information has surfaced that the cargo was allegedly brought in by Nalin Bandara, a Member of Parliament for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, along with his wife. They had previously departed for Singapore on the 5th of this month.
Upon their return to Sri Lanka aboard a SriLankan Airlines flight, the couple was subjected to a thorough inspection by customs officials as they prepared to exit through the designated cargo area.
During the inspection, authorities discovered the drones—specifically, 42 units of the 'DJI Mavic Mini 2' model—and 16 communication microphones of the 'DJI Mic Mini 2' model, which had not been declared to customs in accordance with legal procedures. Consequently, customs officials promptly initiated action to formally seize these items.
Under the Sri Lanka Customs Ordinance and civil aviation regulations, the importation of drones and communication equipment for commercial purposes requires prior written approval and licensing from the Ministry of Defence, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission.
