Police Disperse Gathering Commemorating Late 'Kavanthissa' Elephant in Kandy
In a somber tribute to the late 'Kavanthissa' elephant, a group gathered at the revered Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy to light lamps in remembrance. However, local police intervened, dispersing the crowd from the historic site.
The memorial event was organized by the 'Environmental Conservation and Scientific Research Organization,' which displayed a large banner to mark the occasion.
Despite the intent of the gathering, police officials informed organizers that such commemorations were not permitted within the sacred premises.
Following the police notification, the organizers, along with devotees who came to pay their respects, shifted their focus to distributing various fruits to the public and fellow worshippers as a gesture of goodwill.
The much-loved 'Kavanthissa,' known as one of the largest and tallest elephants in Sri Lanka's forest system, tragically succumbed to injuries sustained from a gunshot wound while receiving treatment last October.
His death sparked discussions and heightened sensitivity among environmentalists and the public regarding the preservation of Sri Lankan elephants, prevention of wildlife crimes, and the enforcement of laws against those responsible.
