New Measures Implemented for Opening Bank Accounts and Renewing Vehicle Permits Amid TIN Registration Challenges

In light of the ongoing congestion at local revenue offices, individuals who have yet to obtain their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) will now have the opportunity to open bank accounts and renew vehicle permits, following the provision of essential basic information. This announcement was made by the Cabinet Media Spokesperson, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

During a media briefing to communicate cabinet decisions, the minister explained that while the requirement for a TIN number for these services has been in effect since November 1, the government recognized the practical difficulties faced by the public. To mitigate the pressure on citizens, the decision was made to implement this temporary procedure.

Accordingly, institutions will record the necessary basic information from individuals unable to secure a TIN, ensuring that relevant services can continue uninterrupted.
