Four Arrested in Massive Financial Fraud Investigation in Matara

In a significant development, four suspects, including the head of the Matara police's administrative division, Chief Inspector Waruni Keshala Bogahawaththa, were remanded until June 6 by Chief Magistrate Chathura Disanayaka today, following their arrest under the Money Laundering Act for alleged failure to verify funds used for vehicle purchases and installment payments.

This decision came after the suspects were presented to the court by the police's Financial Crimes Investigation Division. Among those remanded are a staff member and a nurse from the Matara general hospital, as well as a former director of a diverse service cooperative society in Beralapanathara.

Court officials revealed that the investigation had uncovered links between the suspects and an extensive fraud scheme involving over Rs. 500 million purported to have occurred within the Matara cooperative society. This massive financial deception was brought to light through extensive inquiries conducted by the investigative team.

Additionally, it was disclosed in court that the Chief Inspector had failed to provide legal sources to confirm substantial funds received in her bank accounts, along with installment payments made for vehicles connected to her.

During a special operation conducted by the Financial Crimes Division on October 16, two vehicles, two trucks, and the Chief Inspector's car were seized by police under the Money Laundering Act. This seizure was part of an ongoing investigation into illegal fund transfers from depositors of several institutions, including the Matara District Cooperative Rural Bank Union and other diverse service cooperatives, that allegedly facilitated fraudulent transactions.

Chamintha Gunasekara, a former chairman of one of these cooperatives, had previously been arrested and remanded for his involvement in this financial fraud case.

The Criminal Investigation Department and the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit continue their thorough investigation into the money laundering network, scrutinizing how the proceeds from this fraud were distributed as bribes and properties to various parties involved.
