ඉදිරි අගෝස්තු, සැප්තැම්බර් සහ ඔක්තෝබර් මාසවලදී මෙරටට අතිප්‍රබල එල්නිනෝ තත්ත්වයක් බලපෑ හැකි බව කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව අනතුරු අඟවයි.

එම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල් අජිත් විජේමාන්න මහතා පෙන්වා දෙන්නේ එවැනි තත්ත්වයක් ඇති වීමේ සම්භාවිතාව සියයට 81ක් වැනි ඉහළ අගයක පවතින බවයි.

මධ්‍යම සහ නැගෙනහිර පැසිෆික් සාගරයේ උෂ්ණත්වය සාමාන්‍ය මට්ටමට වඩා ඉහළ යාම මෙම තත්ත්වයට ප්‍රධාන හේතුව වී තිබේ.

මෙහි බලපෑම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ උතුරු සහ නැගෙනහිර පළාත්වලට මෙන්ම බණ්ඩාරවෙල වැනි ප්‍රදේශවලට ද දැනටමත් දැනෙමින් පවතින බව වාර්තා වේ.

විශේෂයෙන්ම අගෝස්තු මාසයේදී දිවයිනේ අවම සහ උපරිම උෂ්ණත්වය යන දෙකම ඉහළ යා හැකි බව අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල්වරයා සඳහන් කරයි.

මේ හේතුවෙන් දහවල් කාලයේදී පමණක් නොව, රාත්‍රී කාලයේදී ද ජනතාවට අධික රස්නයක් සහිත අපහසුතාවලට මුහුණ දීමට සිදු වනු ඇත.

පවතින වියළි කාලගුණය සහ අධික උෂ්ණත්වය හමුවේ අනුරාධපුර සහ රත්නපුර දිස්ත්‍රික්කවල ලැව්ගිනි (Wildfires) ඇති වීමේ දැඩි අවදානමක් පවතින බව ද කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව පවසයි.

මේ වන විටත් දිවයිනේ ප්‍රදේශ කිහිපයකින් වනාන්තර ගිනි ගැනීම් වාර්තා වී ඇති අතර, ඒ පිළිබඳව දැඩි අවධානයෙන් පසුවන ලෙස වන සංරක්ෂණ දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව මහජනතාවගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියි.

Severe El Niño Conditions Expected to Impact Sri Lanka This Year

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning that Sri Lanka could face extremely strong El Niño conditions during August, September, and October. This potential climate phenomenon poses significant risks to the country's weather patterns.

Director General of Meteorology, Ajith Wijesekera, highlighted that the likelihood of such conditions forming is remarkably high, at around 81%. This escalation is primarily driven by rising sea temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which are above normal levels.

Reports indicate that the effects are already being felt in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, as well as in areas like Bandaragama.

Wijesekera specifically noted that both minimum and maximum temperatures across the island could rise significantly during August. As a result, residents may confront uncomfortable conditions not only during the day but also at night due to the excessive heat.

The ongoing dry weather combined with elevated temperatures poses a serious risk of wildfires in districts like Anuradhapura and Ratnapura, according to the Meteorology Department.

Wildfires have already been reported in several areas of the country, prompting the Department of Wildlife Conservation to urge the public to remain vigilant and informed about the situation.
