පාර්ලිමේන්තු වරප්‍රසාද කමිටුව හමුවේ පෙනී සිටින ලෙස බීබීසී සිංහල සේවයේ මාධ්‍යවේදීන් දෙදෙනෙකුට නිකුත් කර තිබූ කැදවීම අවලංගු කර ඇති බව විශ්වාස කටයුතු ආරංචි මාර්ග සඳහන් කරයි.

ජූලි මස 23 වැනිදාට නියමිතව තිබූ මෙම විභාගය තවදුරටත් සිදු නොවන බව බීබීසී සිංහල සේවයට දැනුම් දී ඇති නමුත්, එම තීරණයට හේතුවක් මෙතෙක් අනාවරණය කර නොමැත.

ජාතික ජන බලවේගයේ පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී ලක්මාලි හේමචන්ද්‍ර මහත්මිය විසින් කථානායක ජගත් වික්‍රමරත්න මහතාගෙන් කරන ලද ඉල්ලීමකට අනුව මෙම කැඳවීම සිදු කර තිබුණි.

කාන්තා මන්ත්‍රී සංසදයේ රැස්වීමක් සම්බන්ධයෙන් බීබීසී සිංහල වෙබ් අඩවිය පළ කළ වාර්තාවක අසත්‍ය තොරතුරු අඩංගු බවත්, එමගින් පාර්ලිමේන්තු වරප්‍රසාද උල්ලංඝනය වී ඇති බවත් ඇය චෝදනා කළාය.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, මාධ්‍යවේදීන් පාර්ලිමේන්තු කමිටුව හමුවට කැඳවීමට ගත් මෙම පියවර මාධ්‍ය නිදහසට සහ අදහස් ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමේ අයිතියට එල්ල වූ බරපතළ තර්ජනයක් ලෙස හඳුන්වමින් මාධ්‍ය සංවිධාන, මානව හිමිකම් කණ්ඩායම් සහ සිවිල් සංවිධාන රැසක් සිය විරෝධය පළ කළහ.

BBC Sinhala Journalists' Summons to Parliament Committee Withdrawn Amid Controversy

The summons issued to two journalists from the BBC Sinhala Service to appear before the Parliamentary Privileges Committee has been annulled, according to reliable sources in the media. This decision comes ahead of a scheduled meeting on July 23, which will no longer take place, although the reasons behind this cancellation remain undisclosed.

The initial summons was prompted by a request from Lakmali Hemachandra, a Member of Parliament representing the National People’s Power, directed towards Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. It was alleged that a report published on the BBC Sinhala website contained inaccurate information regarding a gathering of female parliamentarians, leading to accusations of a breach of parliamentary privileges.

Hemachandra further alleged that the report revealed confidential details related to a highly controversial child exploitation case, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the matter.

Consequently, BBC producers Ishara Dhanasekara and journalist Sampath Disanayake were notified to appear before the committee. However, this move to summon media personnel has drawn significant backlash. Media organizations, human rights groups, and civil society organizations have condemned the action as a serious threat to media freedom and the right to free expression.

Several organizations, including the Sri Lanka Professional Journalists’ Association, characterized the summons as an attack on press freedom. They urged authorities not to revive the practice of calling journalists to appear before parliamentary committees regarding their reporting.
