ගොවියා රජෙක් ලෙසත්, මඩ සෝදාගත් කල ඔහු රජකමට සුදුසු බවටත් පවතින කියමන් අතීත යුගයකට පමණක් සීමා වූ ඒවා බවත්, වර්තමාන ආර්ථිකය තුළ සංචාරක ව්‍යාපාරය සහ ඇඟලුම් කර්මාන්තය ප්‍රධාන භූමිකාවක් ඉටු කරන බවත් කෘෂිකර්ම, පශු සම්පත්, ඉඩම් සහ වාරිමාර්ග අමාත්‍ය කේ.ඩී. ලාල්කාන්ත මහතා පවසයි.

ජන හමුවක් අමතමින් අමාත්‍යවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේ, කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය මතම යැපුණු යුගය දැන් අවසන් වී ඇති බවයි.

 "ගොවියෝ රජවරු කියලා කතා හැදුවේ ඒ කාලේ අපේ ප්‍රධාන දේ කෘෂිකර්මාන්තය වුණු නිසයි. අපි ඒකෙන් යැපුණා, ඒකෙන් ජීවත් වුණා. හැබැයි දැන් තත්ත්වය වෙනස්. අද සංචාරක ව්‍යාපාරය සහ ඇඟලුම් කර්මාන්තය තමයි රටට විදේශ විනිමය ගේන ප්‍රධාන මාර්ග" යැයි ඔහු සඳහන් කළේය.

මෙරට සහල් නිෂ්පාදනය පිළිබඳව අදහස් දක්වමින් අමාත්‍යවරයා කියා සිටියේ, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙන් තවමත් සහල් ඇටයක් හෝ විදේශ රටකට අපනයනය නොකරන බවයි.

"අපේ හාල් වර්ගවලට විදේශ වෙළඳපොළේ තවමත් ඉල්ලුමක් නැහැ. අපි කරන්නේ දේශීය පරිභෝජනයට අවශ්‍ය බත සපයන එක විතරයි. ඒ නිසා ගොවියා විතරක් නෙවෙයි රටේ ආර්ථිකයට දායක වෙන්නේ" යනුවෙන් ඔහු පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

තමන් මතම රටේ ජනතාවගේ කෑම බීම සහ පැවැත්ම තීරණය වන බවට ගොවීන් තුළ පවතින මතය වර්තමානයට නොගැලපෙන බව ද ලාල්කාන්ත මහතා අවධාරණය කළේය.

"අපි තමයි මූලික, අපි තමයි රජවරු, අපි නැත්නම් මිනිස්සුන්ට කන්න නැහැ කියලා හිතනවා නම් ඒක වැරදියි. අද ඇඟලුම් කර්මාන්තයේ ඉන්න අයත්, සංචාරක ක්ෂේත්‍රයේ ඉන්න අයත් රටේ ආර්ථිකයට විශාල ශක්තියක් දෙනවා" යැයි ද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

කෘෂිකර්ම අමාත්‍යවරයා ලෙස තමන් මෙම සත්‍යය ප්‍රකාශ කළ යුතු බවත්, ගොවීන් ද නව ලෝක යථාර්ථය වටහාගෙන කටයුතු කළ යුතු බවත් ඒ මහතා මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් කියා සිටියේය.

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation K.D. Lal Kantha stated that the perception of farmers as "kings" and the notion that their position as such is merely based on historical times has changed. He emphasized that in the current economy, the tourism industry and the apparel sector play a significant role.

Addressing a public gathering, the minister pointed out that the era where agriculture was the primary sustenance has now ended.

"The talk of farmers being the kings was because our main industry was agriculture during that time. We relied on it for our livelihoods. However, the situation has changed now. Today, the tourism industry and apparel sector are the main avenues through which the country generates foreign exchange," he mentioned.

Offering insights into rice production in the country, the minister indicated that Sri Lanka has not yet exported a single grain of rice to foreign nations.

"There is still no demand for our rice varieties in the international market. What we are doing is only supplying rice needed for local consumption. Hence, it is not just the farmers who are contributing to the country’s economy," he pointed out.

Lal Kantha stressed that the notion among farmers that the livelihoods and food security of the nation are solely dependent on them does not align with present realities.

"If we think that we are the primary ones and that without us, people wouldn't have food, that is incorrect. Those working in the apparel industry and tourism sector also contribute significantly to the economy," he further stated.

The agriculture minister expressed the necessity to acknowledge this truth and urged farmers to adapt to the new global realities.
