එල්නිනෝ කාලගුණික තත්ත්වය හේතුවෙන් දිවයින පුරා පිහිටි කුඩා වැව් සිඳී යාමේ දැඩි අවදානමක් පවතින බව වාරිමාර්ග අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල් ඉංජිනේරු කින්සිරි වැලිගෙපොළ මහතා පවසයි.

මේ හේතුවෙන් වගා කටයුතු මෙන්ම අනෙකුත් අවශ්‍යතා සඳහා ද ජලය ඉතා අරපිරිමැස්මෙන් භාවිතා කරන ලෙස ඔහු මහජනතාවගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියි.

කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ පුරෝකථනයන්ට අනුව එල්නිනෝ තත්ත්වය මේ වන විටත් ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙමින් පවතින අතර, ඉදිරි සති කිහිපය තුළ එය තවදුරටත් වර්ධනය විය හැකි බව වාරිමාර්ග අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල්වරයා පෙන්වා දෙයි.

දැනට යල කන්නයේ අස්වනු නෙළීමේ කටයුතු අවසන් වෙමින් පවතින බැවින් වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව යටතේ පවතින බොහෝ ව්‍යාපෘතිවල ජල නිකුත් කිරීම් අවසන් අදියරේ පවතී.

වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව යටතේ ක්‍රියාත්මක වන ප්‍රධාන වාරි යෝජනා ක්‍රම 73ක් සහ මධ්‍යම පරිමාණයේ වැව් 210ක සමස්ත ජල ධාරිතාව මේ වන විට සියයට 47ක් දක්වා පහත වැටී තිබේ.

පවතින වියළි කාලගුණය තවදුරටත් පැවතුණහොත්, ලබන ඔක්තෝබර් මාසයේ ආරම්භ වීමට නියමිත මහ කන්නයේ වගා කළ යුතු බිම් ප්‍රමාණය පිළිබඳව තීරණයක් ගැනීමට සිදුවනු ඇතැයි ද ඒ මහතා සඳහන් කළේය.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, ජනතාවගේ පානීය ජල අවශ්‍යතාවය සපුරාලීම සඳහා ප්‍රමුඛතාවය ලබා දෙන බවත්, ඒ පිළිබඳව අනියත බියක් ඇති කර නොගත යුතු බවත් අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල්වරයා අවධාරණය කරයි.

පවතින තත්ත්වය හමුවේ වුවද මෙවර කන්නයේ සාර්ථක අස්වැන්නක් අපේක්ෂා කරන බැවින්, ඉදිරියේදී සහල් හිඟයක් ඇති වීමේ අවදානමක් නොමැති බව ද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

El Niño Conditions Raise Concerns Over Water Resources in Sri Lanka

Severe risks to small irrigation tanks across the island have emerged due to ongoing El Niño weather conditions, warns Engineer Kinsiri Waligepola, the Director General of Irrigation. He emphasized the critical situation and urged the public to conserve water for agricultural and other essential needs.

According to forecasts from the Meteorology Department, the El Niño phenomenon is currently active and may intensify in the coming weeks, which adds to the urgency of the situation that Waligepola highlighted.

As preparations for harvesting paddy in the Yala season draw to a close, many water discharge projects under the irrigation department are entering their final stages. The department operates 73 major irrigation schemes and 210 medium-sized tanks, but the overall water storage capacity has fallen to just 47%.

Should the dry weather persist, a decision will be necessary regarding the acreage allocated for cultivation in the Maha season, which is expected to commence in October, he noted. However, Waligepola reaffirmed that the priority remains on meeting the population's drinking water needs, emphasizing there should be no undue fears regarding this aspect.

Despite the current challenges, he expressed optimism for a successful harvest this season, stating that there is no imminent threat of a rice shortage in the future.
