Food Insecurity Warning: 1 to 1.5 Million Sri Lankans in Need of Humanitarian Assistance

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) has issued a stark warning that between 1 million to 1.5 million people in Sri Lanka will require access to nutritious food by January next year. This alarming assessment highlights the urgency for humanitarian aid in a country grappling with food insecurity.

Feeding into this distressing reality, the organization, which operates with American aid, indicates a significant spike in food insecurity is anticipated from October to December. Specific economic challenges after the country’s recent crisis have hindered recovery, with urban job opportunities experiencing only moderate growth.

Rising food prices, transportation costs, and utility expenses have compounded the struggles faced by families. Despite these increasing costs, wages have not seen a corresponding rise, driving low-income households to restrict their food intake or reduce the number of meals they consume daily.

Particularly vulnerable are low-income plantation workers in wet zones, as well as fishing communities along the Western, Northern, and Eastern coasts. Additionally, urban poor populations find themselves at heightened risk of food scarcity.

The predicted escalation in marketplace food prices, driven by increased transportation costs and agricultural inputs, is poised to persist at elevated levels through September, according to FEWS NET.

The absence of large-scale emergency food assistance programs is exacerbating the situation. FEWS NET warns that this trend will significantly affect urban and peri-urban populations in the near future, amplifying the gravity of the food crisis in the country.
