"නන්දා මාලිනී මහත්මිය සහ මහාචාර්ය සුනිල් ආරියරත්න මහතා වෙනුවෙන් උපහාරයක් ලෙස ඔවුන්ගේ නම්වලින් උදාගම්මාන දෙකක් නම් කිරීමට මට විශාල ආසාවක් තිබුණා. ඒ සම්බන්ධයෙන් මම ඔවුන් දෙදෙනාටම දුරකථනයෙන් කතා කරලා යෝජනා කළා. නමුත් ඔවුන් දෙදෙනාම ඉතාම කාරුණිකව මගේ ඒ යෝජනාව ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කළා. තමන්ට එවැනි නාමික ඇගයීම් අවශ්‍ය නොවන බවයි ඔවුන් එහිදී ප්‍රකාශ කළේ."

හම්බන්තොට දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ ලසිත් මාලිංග, කුමාර සංගක්කාර වැනි ප්‍රවීණ ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩකයන්ගේ නමින් ගම්මාන නම් කර ඇති බව පෙන්වා දෙමින් තමන් මෙම යෝජනාව ඉදිරිපත් කළ ද, ඔවුන්ගේ නිහතමානීත්වය සහ ප්‍රතිපත්තිගරුක බව හේතුවෙන් එම යෝජනාව ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීමට ඉඩක් නොලැබුණු බවද විපක්ෂ නායකවරයා වැඩිදුරටත් කියා සිටියේය.

Opposition Leader Reveals Rejection of Honorary Naming Proposal for Late Artists

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa disclosed that both the esteemed vocalist Nanda Malini and Professor Sunil Ariyaratne declined his proposal to name two villages in their honor. This revelation came during his remarks to the media while paying his last respects to Nanda Malini.

Premadasa expressed his wish to commemorate the contributions of the two legendary figures by suggesting village names that would celebrate their legacies. He emphasized that he had personally reached out to both artists via phone to present his idea, but their response was one of gracious refusal.

"Both Nanda Malini and Professor Sunil Ariyaratne kindly declined my proposal, stating that they do not require such honorary recognitions," he stated.

Diving deeper into his reasoning for the suggestion, Premadasa pointed out that many renowned cricketers, such as Lasith Malinga and Kumar Sangakkara, have had villages named after them. However, he acknowledged the humility and principled nature of Nanda Malini and Ariyaratne as the reasons why the proposal remained unimplemented.
