 මහවැලි ගඟේ ඉහළ ධාරා ප්‍රදේශවලට ඇද හැලෙන අධික වර්ෂාව හේතුවෙන් ඉදිරි පැය 48 තුළ මහා ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයක් ඇතිවීමේ දැඩි අවදානමක් පවතින බව වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව නිවේදනය කරයි.

මේ හේතුවෙන් මහවැලි ගඟ ආශ්‍රිත පහත්බිම්වල වෙසෙන ජනතාවට වහාම ක්‍රියාත්මක වන පරිදි ‘රතු’ (අංක 01) මට්ටමේ ගංවතුර අනතුරු ඇඟවීමේ නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කර තිබේ.

වාරිමාර්ග අධ්‍යක්ෂ ජනරාල් ඉංජිනේරු කිත්සිරි වැලිගෙපොලගේ මහතාගේ අත්සනින් යුතුව අද (03) පස්වරු 1.00ට නිකුත් කරන ලද මෙම නිවේදනය එළඹෙන අගෝස්තු 05 වනදා පස්වරු 1.00 දක්වා බලපැවැත්වේ.

පසුගිය පැය කිහිපය තුළ මහවැලි ගඟේ ඉහළ පෝෂක ප්‍රදේශවලට ලැබුණු අධික වර්ෂාපතනය සහ ඉදිරියේදී තවදුරටත් වැසි ලැබෙනු ඇතැයි යන කාලගුණ අනාවැකි මත පදනම්ව මෙම අනතුරු ඇඟවීම සිදු කර ඇත.

විශේෂයෙන්ම කොත්මලේ ජලාශයේ වාන් දොරටු විවෘත කිරීමට සිදුවීමේ අවදානමක් පවතින බැවින් ගඟේ ජල මට්ටම ශීඝ්‍රයෙන් ඉහළ යා හැකි බව වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව පෙන්වා දෙයි.

මෙම ගංවතුර අවදානම උඩුනුවර, උඩපළාත, යටිනුවර, දොළුව, කොත්මලේ, පස්බාගේ, ගඟ ඉහළ කෝරළේ, පස්බාගේ කෝරළේ, ගඟවට කෝරළේ, හාරිස්පත්තුව සහ පාතදුම්බර යන ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් කොට්ඨාසවලට අයත් මහවැලි ගඟ ආශ්‍රිත පහත්බිම් ප්‍රදේශවලට බලපානු ඇතැයි අපේක්ෂා කෙරේ.

එබැවින් එම ප්‍රදේශවල පදිංචි ජනතාව මේ පිළිබඳව දැඩි විමසිල්ලෙන් පසුවිය යුතු අතර, ඇතිවිය හැකි ගංවතුර තත්ත්වයකින් ආරක්ෂා වීමට අවශ්‍ය පූර්ව ආරක්ෂිත පියවර ගන්නා ලෙස ද උපදෙස් දී තිබේ.

මේ සම්බන්ධයෙන් අවශ්‍ය ක්‍රියාමාර්ග ගන්නා ලෙස ආපදා කළමනාකරණ අංශවලින් ද ඉල්ලා සිටින වාරිමාර්ග දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව, පවතින තත්ත්වය පිළිබඳව අතිශය අවධානයෙන් පසුවන ලෙස මහජනතාවගෙන් වැඩිදුරටත් ඉල්ලා සිටියි.

Severe Flood Risk Alerts Issued for Low-lying Areas Along Mahaweli River

The Department of Irrigation has issued a warning of a significant flood risk in the low-lying areas adjacent to the Mahaweli River, driven by heavy rainfall in upstream regions. Authorities caution that conditions could lead to major flooding within the next 48 hours.

As a precautionary measure, a 'red' flood alert (Level 01) has been activated for communities residing in these vulnerable areas. This notification, signed by the Director General of Irrigation, Engineer Kithsiri Waligepola, was released on March 3 at 1:00 PM and will remain in effect until 1:00 PM on August 5.

This alert follows reports of substantial rainfall in the Mahaweli River catchment over the past few hours, with forecasts indicating continued precipitation in the coming days.

Concerns are particularly focused on the Kotmale Reservoir, where the possibility of opening floodgates could heighten water levels in the river significantly, according to the Department of Irrigation.

The flood threat is expected to impact low-lying areas within the regional secretariats of Udunuwara, Udapalatha, Yatinuwara, Doluwakanda, Kotmale, Pasbage Korale, Gangitiyawal, Harispattuwa, and Pathadumbara.

Residents in these regions are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard against potential flooding. The Department of Irrigation is also calling on disaster management officials to implement necessary measures while urging the public to pay close attention to the ongoing situation.
